Mission

Striving to cure neurological diseases while empowering communities to build a healthier world.

The McCourt Family is no stranger to family illness and caregiving. Long before any one of the seven brothers were born, their father, Robert, was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) when he was just 25 years old.

He lived with the disease for 42 years and passed away in 1991 at the age of 67. After seeing the effect MS has on both the patient and caregivers first-hand, the McCourt brothers felt an unnerving desire to help others within the MS community.

So, to honor their father and do their part in giving back, they entered the fundraising world in 1992 by organizing a road race in Harwich Port, MA—the first step to what became a much larger giving journey. That journey evolved when their mother Mary, was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease (AD)—and lived with the illness for over a decade.

The McCourt brothers lost both of their parents to two very different diseases, but both fell within the neurology community. Feeling empathy and compassion for families battling a plethora of incurable neurological diseases, their philanthropic efforts grew into what is now The McCourt Foundation (TMF).

Today, the Foundation's mission, striving to cure neurological diseases while empowering others to build a healthier world, encompasses the McCourt family's original cause, while also using events as a platform for other like-minded non-profit organizations to deliver a greater impact. With events in Boston and LA, our giving capacity and overall impact can be felt from coast to coast.

Our 3 Pillars of Focus

Since 1992, we’ve donated more than $6.3 million to neurology research and generated more than $68 million for our 105+ nonprofit charity partners. We do this and make a difference by focusing on our 3 pillars:

  • Research: We support and donate to fund neurological research.
  • Education: We host free educational forums for those affected by neurological diseases such as ALS, MS, Parkinson's and Alzheimer’s.
  • Partnerships: We build strategic partnerships and leverage our mass participation athletic events as platforms to drive broader health and wellness impact. Our events include the Los Angeles Marathon, Rose Bowl Half Marathon & 5K, Santa Monica Classic, LA Big 5K, Boston Waterfront 5K, and Tour de South Shore.

To further develop our culture of giving and growing other health focused nonprofit communities, we use our events in Boston and Los Angeles as platforms for other nonprofits to create awareness about their mission and raise funds for their organization.  Through our Nonprofit Partnership Program we've generated over $68 million for the larger health and wellness community and helped transform many lives for the better.
