Overview
Hurricane Helene
Response update: October 6, 2024, 12:00 p.m.
The full scope of devastation from Hurricane Helene is being realized as the floodwaters recede. At least 225 deaths have been confirmed, and millions are still without power. The impact is widespread across multiple states in the Southeast.
Southern Baptist Disaster Relief (SBDR) teams rapidly deployed to serve these communities, and have been working hard across more than twenty response sites across the region. Your gifts are supplying meals, water, temporary roofing, flood recovery supplies, and more for these sites.
Southern Baptists are at work in states across the Southeast.
- Florida: Florida Southern Baptist Disaster Relief is assessing needs over a widespread area of impact. Recovery and feeding sites are active in Perry and Live Oak, Florida, and local teams are doing chainsaw work.
- Georgia: At least seven recovery sites have been established in the state, providing meals, shower and laundry trailers, and chainsaw teams. Send Relief’s Valdosta ministry center sustained some damage to its property but is continuing to serve the community.
- North Carolina: Western North Carolina has experienced historic damage and flooding, and the impact in the region is devastating. Several recovery and feeding sites have been established through North Carolina SBDR. Please pray for volunteer teams as they access hard-to-reach areas in the mountainous region.
- Tennessee: East Tennessee experienced wind damage and flooding. Tennessee SBDR is assessing damage where there has been significant flooding, and has set up at least three recovery sites.
- South Carolina and Virginia: Southern Baptist Disaster Relief teams are assessing needs and setting up feeding and recovery sites as needed.
Send Relief’s regional quick-response warehouse and tractor-trailers loaded with supplies have deployed resources to areas of highest need. We are also in touch with our national partners like the Salvation Army, as well as FEMA and the Red Cross, to ensure a coordinated response.
You can help Send Relief bring hope and help amid hurricanes and other crises by giving and by praying:
- Pray for multiple states’ Disaster Relief teams. With help from Send Relief, they are feeding hungry people, distributing supplies and beginning to help homeowners clean up debris.
- Pray for churches in the area as they work to meet their neighbors’ needs and share the love of Jesus with storm-weary communities.
